Abstract
Despite the well-documented benefits of engaging in regular physical activity, a large proportion of the global population is increasingly becoming physically inactive. Motivation has been widely recognized as one of the key factors that inspires participation in physical activity. Research on participation motivation indicates that individuals’ involvement in a range of physical activities may be differentially characterised by specific motives. In this chapter, I examine the literature on motivation in physical activity and propose that a systematic pattern of participation motives be developed so that health researchers and practitioners can devise appropriate and effective interventions to prescribe suitable forms of physical activity for individuals that meet their primary participation motives.
