Abstract
Although mindfulness has been practiced for millennia in the Eastern world, its adaptation and application in the Western world has been a recent phenomenon. Over the past several decades, mindfulness and mindfulness-based approaches have garnered considerable interest in the field of psychology, especially sport, exercise, and performance psychology. Although there has been an explosion of research reporting on the salutary effects of mindfulness on promoting positive and down-regulating negative psychophysiological states, the evidence linking mindfulness training to performance enhancement is still inconsistent. As interest in mindfulness increases, more research is required to understand and demystify the path of mindfulness and ascertain how this may be effectively used in sport, exercise, and performance contexts to maximize psychological well-being.
